Journal reporter KIM BARBIERI investigates Russian money-laundering in New York. She can’t find one Russian of interest, MAXIM LEBEDEV, and suspects foul play. Her snooping around angers BRATVA, the Russian Mafia, which makes her number one on their hit list. Because BARBIERI is in New York, Bratva enlists Kremlin allies to help kill her. The plot is led by two old Bratva hands in Brooklyn, VASILY KLIM and GRIGORY GRYSHIN. After a realtor BARBIERI interviewed is murdered, she alerts NYPD COMMANDER TIMOTHY BRENNAN, her old boy-toy. At home in Brooklyn, BARBIERI discovers she is being followed and the Journal assigns bodyguards to protect her. BARBIERI interviews LEBEDEV’s partner, and he is murdered. BRATVA orders Novichok, Russia’s most lethal poison, to use to kill BARBIERI A Russian source visiting Manhattan is murdered by his own bodyguards. LEBEDEV turns up dead, an apparent suicide. The ME finds traces of arsenic, known to cause severe depression. TIMOTHY BRENNAN’s detectives conclude that he and the realtor were both victims of the same Russian killer. In Moscow, Kremlin scientists prepare Novichok. It is transported to New York. Agents learn she takes migraine medication, and inject Novichok into devices identical to those she uses. Russian agents knock out her bodyguards, and replace her medication with their lethal version. But she notices that the medication is past its ‘use by’ date, and tosses the whole box. Not realizing how close she came to being killed, BARBIERI keeps writing damning articles. And the assassination plot is considered a failure. Someone in Bratva has to pay. KLIM, GRYSHIM and their agents are all murdered – victims of their own Russian mob.
