Sixteen-year-old Johann Gehring accepts a sponsorship to work for a cousin in Nebraska and leaves his family in Germany to find his destiny. He travels by train and then endures the hardships of traveling a ship from Germany to America in search of his dreams using a train ticket to Antelope County in Nebraska. Challenged by the never-ending wind, rolling, treeless hills, and a lonely life on the prairie, Johann and his sponsor struggle to stay the course and make a home on the Nebraska plains. Johann learns to dig a well, build a sod house, and preserve strange new foods. But nature is the strongest foe sending tornados, prairie fires, and freezing winters. Romance and love fill Johann’s life by a determined Helena. During their marriage, they raise five independent children including the head-strong, Berta. Through country schooling, corn husking bees, and learning how to live on the prairie, the Gehring children rely on each other like the branches of a lone cottonwood tree.
