Wheelboys is a modern parable of unintended consequences for all ages. An emotional, action-packed novel that follows the summer events of three families who are invested in amateur auto racing. Chad Gibbons and his best friend, Gary Lee Dillanger, have worked their way through the ranks of competitive go-karting with the legendary Kilgore racing family. Tragedy strikes, and Chad is left to find his own way. More than a coming-of-age story, this book challenges society’s complacency with the exploitation of young talent and questions adult and corporate responsibilities.
Additional Info
Dd began to advocate for teen driver safety in 2006 after her 18 year old daughter was killed by speed and reckless driving. She supported a successful effort in Florida to pass more effective street racing laws. In her research, Dd discovered the world of youth racing, which had dark corners that enriched some entrepreneurs by selling the thrill of speed. The story of Wheelboys was inspired by actual scenarios. The characters and events in the book are fictional, but the story itself is surprisingly very real and engaging. The journeys faced by these three families are universal and resonate for any reader: overcoming grief, finding one’s path, and discovering love.
